Can we use My Tri Ranking to predict international results?

This weekend we got a first look at how the My Tri Ranking scores relate to results on the international stage. With age group and elite racing over multiple distances in duathlon from sprint to middle distance it was an opportunity not only to see where athletes rate at elite level but also some cross referencing of Irish and British scores.

Age Group

Cillian Cloney of Ireland finished 3rd in the 16-19 open sprint race in the European Championships with 1 GB athlete ahead of him in Joe Reed, and a host of others behind him. Cloney went into the race with a score of 818, ranked 69 in Ireland, while Reed started with a score of 856. Arran Ritchie, 783 finished 4th followed by Isaac Bradford, 750. Callum Urquhart finished 5th starting with 777 so the rankings certainly seemed to hold in this age bracket.

In the 30-34 age group Isaac Kerr and Gary Condell raced for Ireland against 1 Polish athlete, the winner Bartlomiej Stagniak, and came 7th and 8th. All others in the field or 15 were GB athletes. Kerr and Condell were rated at 827 and 841. Tom Radley led home Team GB started with a rating of 887 followed by Beau Smith, 908. Either side of the 2 Irish athletes we had Jules Blanc, 836 and Benjamin Rushton, 805. Allowing for a mix of races both non drafting and draft legal in the scores this was a fairly solid  performance by the ratings.

Pamela Grogan of Ireland finished 1 minute behind Joanna Lockwood, Team GB, in the 50-54 age group standard distance race with both starting the event with a score of 750 further endorsing the rankings.

Elite

Among the elites we had no Irish athletes racing but Arthur Ballard, 902, GB, finished 9th in the Junior Men giving us a possible base of 900 to be competitive at this level. Ballard just wasn’t quite quick enough when the attacks went into T1 to hold the leaders and make the front bike group having been in the lead group of 10 at 4k.

Mack Downey was the best of Team GB in the Elite men’s race finishing 12th. Downey started with a rating of 937, while Isabelle Franco finished 10th in the women's race off 923.

Slightly beyond the remit of the rankings as it was a middle distance event, Niall Cornyn raced for Ireland in the non drafting World Championships. Cornyn finished in 19th place starting with a rating of 917. He was behind Mathew Nelson, Team GB, 950 points, and ahead of Adam Baker, 908. Nelson finished 4 minutes off the winning time and again proving good information on creating a baseline of what is needed for these events.
