Supertri E World Championships

Luke McCarron had a very good day at the Supertri E World Championships on Saturday finishing 9th overall having qualified 3rd in his heat.
While I said previously that there was some variance between the rankings of the 30 starters there were still plenty of well known names and many much higher ranked athletes who did not make the final.
There are lies, damned lies and statistics but McCarron’s splits do make interesting reading combined with a look back at his previous races. He has been a slow starter and struggled with early speed before and here again he had a slow first swim with a 2.20 against a field average of 2.11 and 6 seconds off eventual winner Maxime Hueber Moosbrugger. While he did have the heat earlier in the day to get some acclimation to the event he has very few races of real intensity in recent times and of course was coming into the race off a week of work compared to the full time athletes all around him. He may also still have work to do to nail down a warm up that prepares for an almost maximal start because he was faster in both subsequent swims including being faster than Hueber Moosbrugger on final leg and only 3 seconds off Chase McQueen, eventual runner up.
His bike splits though were very good and a positive sign moving forward. Across the 3 splits he was only 1 second off the field average while having a combined bike time faster than Henry Graf who had been superb recently in the Indoor World Cup in Lievin and had a very impressive bike in Abu Dhabi at the start of the year. Can he reproduce this where handling, position on the bike and other variables come into play?
The run was more of a struggle but again showed some promise and should be looked at with an allowance for his work environment versus full time training. The transitions again showed to me anyway just a lack of race intensity.
Having all athletes in the same suits and with no drafting on the bike along with the lack of any differences in technology on the bike, frames and tyres for example, creates a very fair time trial event.
