Window closing on Paratriathlon qualification for Paris 2024

By Saturday week we will know which countries have gained the automatic quota slots and how many in each classification. All that will remain then are the Bipartite invitation slots to be selected by the IPC and World Triathlon.

Overall it is taking the equivalent of around 3 World Cup wins to qualify a slot, 1350 points, with few classifications requiring less than 1300. It cannot be emphasised enough, considering the depth of field and the results required, just how impressive it is just to be in the frame at this stage of the qualification window.

With just 2 races to go Ireland is secure in 2 slots. Not enough of the athletes entered can score sufficient points to take Chloe Maccombe, with guide Catherine Sands, out of the Top 9 in PTVI or Cassie Cava out of Top 5 in PTS3 and both still have chances to further improve their totals.

Judith Maccombe, and guide Eimear Nichols, holds 7th in the PTVI rankings and with only 5 entered in that class in Swansea this weekend she will almost certainly be overtaken by at least 1 athlete. She should be ok but will likely have a nervous wait. Leticia Freitas needs a 4th place, Anna Barbaro a 3rd and Alison Peasgood also 3rd or better to move ahead of Maccombe. Even if Chloe Maccombe and Heloise Courvoisier take the top 2 podium spots, others will gain high scores. Anna Barbero, currently in 8th, will have to secure her position this weekend as she is not entered in Montreal.

Donnacha McCarthy along with Guide Sean Husband have had a really impressive year and lie just outside the automatic slots. They will need big scores from both races. They didn't travel to the recent World Cup in Besancon where there simply were not enough points available to shift their position enough. With the increased points available in the 2 World Para series races to come all is still to play for.

Tom Williamson similarly is just behind in 11th place after a fantastic 1st year in the sport. It is going to take two 3rd places to get into 9th but he has been putting himself in position off the bike in his last events and a couple of big runs could make it happen.
